All about FestungsBahn funicular

The FestungsBahn funicular, in the middle of the Salzburg historic district, is the promise of true happiness: In a matter of seconds, it carries passengers up to Fortress Hohensalzburg and the top of popular Mönchsberg mountain. This green oasis in the city surprises with numerous sightseeing attractions and natural treasures.

  • Lenght: 198.5 meters
  • Passenger capacity: 55 people
  • Maximum gradient: ca. 62%
  • › Duration of ride: 54 seconds

A little hidden away, the FestungsBahn funicular is pressed tightly against the steep, rocky mountain deep in the heart of UNESCO World Heritage-listed Salzburg and at the foot of Fortress Hohensalzburg itself. It is ultramodern and one of the most popular methods of transportation in the city of Mozart. First operating on water power, it began service in 1892: Even back then, the intention was to save visitors the steep slog on foot all the way up to the fortress. After multiple modernizations, the FestungsBahn funicular now proudly boasts being the oldest funicular in Austria still in operation today. As appealing now as ever.
