Why Safety Is the Top Priority on Every Ride up to Hohensalzburg Fortress

Every year, the FestungsBahn funicular carries around 2.3 million passengers up to Fortress Hohensalzburg - arguably Salzburg's best-known tourism attraction – in just under a minute. To ensure that every ride is safe and runs smoothly, a precisely coordinated interplay of technology, experienced personnel, and regular inspections takes place behind the scenes. Gabriel Schmalzl, Operations Manager for the FestungsBahn, offers us insights into an area that remains invisible to most visitors, yet is all the more important, and explains what is involved in the general inspection process.

A Conversation with Operations Manager Gabriel Schmalz

Gabriel, you're Operations Manager for the FestungsBahn. What does your day-to-day job actually entail?
(chuckling) A whole bunch, actually. Simply put, I'm responsible for the entire operation – technically, organizationally, and personnel. That means making sure all inspections, including the major overhauls, are conducted appropriately. Also, ensuring that we comply with all legal requirements and that the funicular operates properly. And, of course, making sure our team is utilized as effectively as possible.

Many people see the FestungsBahn purely as a tourist attraction. What don't they get to see?
That there's a highly complex system behind the scenes. The FestungsBahn is a funicular railway – in fact, the oldest one still in operation anywhere in Austria – making it very unique from a technical perspective. Many different components work together here - from the drive system and brakes to the controls. Everything has to function flawlessly. Passengers don't see any of that, of course, but that's where the real work happens.

Inspections & Maintenance: The Heart & Soul of Operational Safety

What does a major inspection involve?
A major inspection is a regular, legally required inspection and maintenance of the entire facility. Every safety-related component is checked – from the brake hydraulics and carriage structure to the electrical systems – in great detail and according to clearly defined procedures.

Why is that so important?
Because we bear a great deal of responsibility transporting thousands of people every single day – on our busiest days, as many as 12,000 passengers. Safety simply has to come first. A major inspection ensures that every component performs exactly as it should – and at all times.

How often does the FestungsBahn undergo a major inspection?
Annually in November we carry out smaller inspections. For example, we check that all of the sliding doors are functioning properly. Then, every January, we conduct an even more comprehensive inspection covering every technical aspect of the funicular railway. That's also when our employees complete their mandatory safety training. Every five years we carry out an even more extensive inspection still, during which additional components are tested and certain parts are replaced.

How does a major inspection actually proceed?
We begin planning well in advance. We coordinate the work with our external specialist contractors and organize our own team accordingly. Wherever possible, the work is carried out by our own staff. Especially when it comes to electrical systems, we have to be able to respond quickly if something stops working. For specialized testing, we bring in experts from the individual manufacturers. That's because the FestungsBahn wasn't built by a single company – its cabins, carriage underframes, electronic controls, and other components all come from different specialist manufacturers. We work closely with all of them to coordinate our inspections. Naturally, our goal is to keep any disruption to normal operations to an absolute minimum. But one thing always comes first: safety!

Which components receive the closest attention during an inspection?
The brakes, clearly. They undergo a complete overhaul - they're removed, dismantled, inspected, serviced, and any damaged or worn parts are replaced. Once everything has been reassembled, the brakes are tested again. They have to deliver exactly the same performance values as they did on day one. But the carriage structure, wheels, and the entire control system also undergo thorough inspection.

Safety by Design - and by Routine

How do you ensure that the FestungsBahn is safe at all times?
As a rule, cableways are among the safest forms of transportation in the world. Our FestungsBahn funicular, for example, is designed so that if there is any doubt, it simply won't operate. In other words, if a fault occurs anywhere in the system, the railway comes to an immediate halt. In addition, there are several redundant safety systems - including multiple brakes that operate independently of one another, should one of them ever fail.

What happens if something unexpected does occur?
That's when our procedures immediately come into play. We have clearly defined processes and an experienced team. We can resolve many smaller issues ourselves, while for more complex situations we work together with our specialist partners. Once a year, we also conduct an emergency exercise with the fire department to practice exactly these kinds of scenarios.

A Look Behind the Scenes

What would surprise passengers most if they could watch an inspection?
Probably how much is actually dismantled and inspected. We examine components that passengers never even see – for example, underneath using our dedicated maintenance areas. We also use specialized methods such as magnetic induction testing to detect even the smallest material defects.

What are the greatest challenges during an inspection?
Above all, organization. There are many people involved and many different trades that have to be coordinated. At the same time, the maintenance window is very tight because we want to keep the funicular closed for as short a time as possible, while still doing everything to the highest standards. And, of course, there are always situations where you are waiting for a replacement part or encounter a problem that can't be resolved right then and there.

Teamwork a Key Component for Success

How big is the team behind day-to-day operations and inspections?
The FestungsBahn has around 30 permanent employees, with additional seasonal staff joining us during the busiest times of year. During the annual inspection, a core team of technicians, operations managers, and workshop personnel works closely together.

How important is experience compared with technology?
Very important. Technology provides the foundation, but without experience and routine none of it would work. Many procedures have become second nature, and it's precisely that know-how that makes the difference. People occasionally don't understand why the funicular needs to close during the inspection period. But for us, safety is always the top priority. When you consider how many people we transport every day, that effort is entirely justified.

What does the FestungsBahn mean to you personally?
It's part of Salzburg's identity – and, of course, it's also my workplace, one that comes with a great deal of responsibility. But that's exactly what makes it so exciting.
